IRISH SETTLEMENT OR CIVIL WAR ?
DRAMATIC APPEAL BY MR LLOYD GEORGE GLOOMY SPEECH CAUSES A STIR While the silence which has characterised the negotiations between the Sinn Fein delegates and the representatives of the British Government has not actually been broken, considerable light has been shed on the situation as the result of the debate in the House of Commons which is extensively dealt with in to-day’s cables. On behalf of the “Die-hards" (a section of Unionists openly opposed to negotiations with the Sinn Fein in any shape or form), Colonel Cretton put forward a motion urging, the abandonment of the negotiations, leaving Parliament to act in accordance with last year’s legislation. The motion was heavily defeated. , The debate brought forward a statement by Mr Lloyd Ceorge, which is interpreted as moaning that a critical point has been reached, and preparing the public for a breakdown with the terrible sequel of civil war.
