NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By

"Carbine.”)

Nominations for th© Woodville meeting, which is to be 'held on December 7th and Bth, close with Secretary W. A. Lyon on November 18th. The withdrawal of Amythas from ibe Stewards' Handicap leaves Silver Link at the 'head of the weights with 9.9. The Achilles mare is very speedy, but her weight is one that has beaten all comers in this event with the one exception of Arrowsmith, who won with 9.13, a great performance. Rational is expected to run a good race in the Stewards*. He has. 8.13 to carry, and the biggest weight under which a three-year-old has ever won is *8.9, which burden Machine Gun carried' to victory in 1903. .Gold Crest won as a three-year-old with • 8.3. and Bon ReVe at the same age with 8.6. In Wellington Sunart is now Letter fancied than any other candidate for the New Zealand Cup. Starland, Rouen, Isabel, Foo Chow, and Warlove are other strong fancies. Rouen's win at Wanganui sends his weight in the Cup up to 8.11. and Sunart incurred a penalty at Trentham, which will mean that he will carry 8.7. On Saturday next one of the best backed horses in the Stewards' will be Absurclum. Alabama was shin sore after racing at Trentham on Saturday, and is not to be sent to Riccarton. Michapla 'has the very handy weight of 7.8 in the Stewards', and that is exactly the mark off which she started when she won the race in fast time three years ago. Mireusonta was unlucky not to win a race at Trentham. Each day she led till near ‘ the winning post, and was then beaten by opponents who got up on the rails. Danger Zone was costly at Wellington, but he looks good enough to make amends. Trespass'finished very fast in the Rearce Handicap, and. had there "been another furlong- to go 'he would have been in the money. Solfanello's running on Saturday was disappointing, but it oould hardly hare been his true form. Backsheesh, was a big tip in the.Ruahine Handicap on the second day at Trentham, but though she showed up at the turn for home and eventually finished fourth she never looked like winning. Miss Gold went very fast in the open six furlongs on the second day at Trentham, and half-way up the straight she looked sure to win, but she failed in the last half furlong. Probably Bhe needed a little more work, and if that was the case she should be very 'hard to beat -next time out. Sister Olive, who won the Melbourne Cup yesterday, was well backed, and The Rover, who ran second, was supported to win a small fortune. There was also a good deal of/money for Amazonia. Mr Ewen Alison, jun., expects to leave England for Sydnev on November 12th, and will not reach Sydney until December 24th. Mr W. T. Jennings. M.P., who returned from a .trip round the world by the Makura last week, met the old time New Zealand bookmaker, Mr rr ßilly" Weston in Kalgoorlie. The ex-New Zealander is now the proprietor of a billiard parlour in Kalgoorlie. In a private letter to "Whalebone" of the Auckland Star," Mr T. H. Lowry mentions that he had intended to attend the Doncaster yearling sales, with the object of purchasing a couple of fillies to send back to New Zealand with Paradise Duck, but ricked a }rnee while shooting and was unable to walk on the day the youngsters were offered. There was a marked change in the prices this year, but; a full-sllter to Paradise Duck brought 5209 "uineas. Mr Lowry expects to be’ back in plenty of time for' the A.R.C. summer meeting, at which be will have several horses racing. A cable message from Melbourne states that the New Zealand-bred. Mermin is to join Broadfield's team at Hemihgton, and will race in Melbourne before going to India. - , \ .
