THE CIVIC LEAGUE
VARIOUS ACTIVITIES. BUSINESS AT LAST MEETINGAt a meeting of the Wellington Cbil League, Mr G. Mitchell, M-P-, presiding, several new members were enrolled. The question of whether some of tiie money raised for tbs unemployed should be allocated for work in an outlying borough, residents there to supplement the same by local subscriptions, was folly considered- It was decided, ‘‘That in view of the limited amount in hand, and that assurances were given to hand over the amounts contributed to the Mayor of Welling—' ton for the employment of residents of the city, the league regrets it cannot make outside allocations.” UNEMPLOYMENT. It was reported that the amount cons tributed to the unemployed fund U date was £1450, and donations wet* still being received. A number of subscription lists were still out, and the committee was asking all who held these to send them in, with any money donated. The total expenditure was £25, -which included some payments for work done by unemployed men. The ■mm of £6OO had been paid in to the City Council, and it was resolved that the balance of £325 _in hand he paid over. The corporation had now 100 men at work, -and the committee hoped the number might be increased. PLAYING GROUNDS. The question of acquiring suitable areas as playing grounds for children was discussed, ana it was decided to act in co-operation with other bodies taking an interest in this matter; also that-visits of inspection be made to localities where suitable land might be acquired. The secretary reported that letters had been sent to fourteen local Municipal and progressive associations, detailing the plans and work of the , league. Ten of these bodies had joined the league, and the others had ths matter under consideration. It was decided to write to the Wellington Hospital Board with reference to the state of the land fronting the hospital grounds, it being understood that ths board had in vienr the renovating and beautifying of such -vacant land. It was reported that the CSty Council had been written to in reference to the bad state of part of Jervois quay, owing to the neglect in removal of the railway lines preventing the putting of the street into proper repair. A reply on this ,and other matters was being awaited from the town clerk. HEALTH CAMPAIGN. The question of the powers of ths corporation to enforce proper regulations to compel the ownetß of private ' properties to renovate and cleanse such houses and yards where the existing conditions are dangerous to the public health and welfare waa discussed. It was thought that more drastic legislation was required. Ike league resolved to go further into the matter at its next meeting. A vote of thanks "was passed to those who had rendered assistance in the work of the unemployment campaign, several persons having given much time and service freely.
