Karl, notwithstanding the Government’s pressure, declines to sign the renunciation of the throne, thus leading to the Catholic Bishop of Hungary being commissioned to appeal to his religious feelings and so avoid serious trouble for the country. If the mission fails, the Government will be compelled to depose him, but this is difficult owing to the attitude of the Christian Nationalists. (Received October 31, 9 p.m.) VIENNA, October 31. The Hungarian bishop failed to pe suade Karl to abdicate. FAR FROM PEACE MOBILISATION OF CZECHOSLOVAK FORCES. AUSTRIA ALARMED. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright Reuter’s Telegram. , LONDON, October 29. ' That Karl’s capture arid the promptness of the Allies in demanding his surrender has not averted danger in South-eastern Europe appears from advices received from Vienna and Prague. News from Prague states that mobilisation of tbe Ozecho-Slovakian army, numbering 168 battalions, will be completed in ten days. Martial law has been proclaimed, and a number of aureate made for plotting against the Republic. The Premier (Dr. Benes), speaking in the Assembly, said that Western Europe had under-estimated * the Hungarian danger, which must be ended at once and for all time, and at any coot, in the interests of Czechoslovakia and all Hie. Allies. Dr. Benes paid a tribute to the faultless working of the mobilisation preparations. He assured the Austrian representative that in the event of action against Hungary, Austria’s neutrality would be respected. Tbe advices from Vienna show that the Austrians are alarmed at the Little Entente ultimatum, fearing not merely that Austria will be entangled in a new war, but that she will be drawn into the orbit of the Little Entente instead of remaining nentral. The Entente is trying to convince them that war is unnecessary, and persuade them not to deliver an ultimatum - It is believed that the war cry in Belgrade is duo to fear that Hungary will hereafter assist Italy militarily is case of need. The “Sunday Express’s” correspondent at Budapest says that Karl and the Queen are closely confined in small grounds in a convent. The Entente’s Note demanding the delivery of Karl to Hie commander of the British flotilla at Budapest and the immediate proclamation of Karl's ' forfeiture of tbe throne has been handed to the Hungarian Government yesterday.
