APOSTOLIC DELEGATE
FIRST OFFICIAL VISIT CANONICAL RECEPTION AT THE BASILICA. TOUR OF DOMINION. Archbishop Bartolomeo Oattaneo, the Apostolic Delegate of the Roman Catholic Church of Australia, New Zealand and Oceania, arrived by the Marama from. Sydney yesterday, on his first official visit to the Dominion. He was accompanied by Archbishop Redwood, Bishop White (Dunedin), and: his secretary (Father Farrelly). A number of the priests and Catholic laity met the party on arrival. Monsignor Oattaneo, who stated that he did not wish to he interviewed, speaks Eftglisli almost perfectly, and is in the prime of life. Born at Novi Ligure, Italy, in 1866, he was educated at the University of Genoa and the Paprauican College, Rome. He was ordained priest in ‘ 1891, and was secretary to the Bishop of Saluzzo from 1895 to 1902, Bishop- of Novara till 1910, and rector of the College of Propaganda at Rome till 1915. He was consecrated titular .Archbishop of Palmyra in 1917, and in October of the same year succeeded Archbishop Cerretti as Apostolic Delegate for Australasia. He will leave to-moxxow evening for Dunedin, and will spend a week in each of the four dioceses of the Dominion. CANONICAL RECEPTION. At the Basilica of the Sacred Heart last night, Archbishop Oattaneo was tendered a canonical reception. He was met at the church door by Archbishop Redwood, and, accompanied by Archbishop O’Shea and’iiishop White, ascended the altar to the accompaniment of “Bcce Sacexdoe” (Elgar) by the Basilica and St. Patrick’s College choirs. At the service Father Smyth, Adm., was- deacon, and Father Farrelly subdeacon. There was a very large congregation, which included all the clergy of the Wellington diocese. The choir under Father Schaefer, of St. Patrick’s College, rendered “Cor Jesum” (Smith), the soloist being Miss Teresa McEnroe. Mr Paul Cullen was at the organ. After the Benediction, Archbishop Cattameo delivered the Apostolic blessing. , „ Monsignor Oattaneo will he the guest of . the diocesan clergy at luncheon at St. Patrick’s College to-day, and there will be a general reception of the Catholic laity at-the college at 3.30 p.m,
