NEW ZEALAND COLLODIAL CLAY. INTERESTING. DEVELOPMENT. Some years ago, while travelling in New Zealand, jar Langley Shaw, of AucklunU, noticed some ataon wahines wosmng blankets, which, on examination, he found peculiarly clean, and U.iso light and fluffy. Being interested in wool scouring, lie asked wliat soap tue women used. An old Maori dame handed him a lump of moist grey-looking earth, which, on investigation, was found to he a saponaceous clay, really aluminium silicate. The outcome of the discovery is that a process was patented tor preparing this article for the market for wool-scouring purposes, and a company in Leeds, England, has recently purchased the Alpha Mills at llkley to exploit the process. CHRISTCHURCH BUTTER. FIVE TONS FOR* AUCKLAND. ■ The fact thaf butter is dearer in Auckland than some other centres of the Dominion has been referred to on more than one occasion recently. Trade has. however, a method of regulating its own anomalies The Katoa, which arrived from Christchurch at Auckland last week, took five tons of butter for sale on the Auckland market. This is surely ■'carrying coals to Newcastle,’’ as Auckland district is a great butter producer, tut if prices are higher in one centre than another, if there is a margin of profit to be made, merchants will promptly take advantage of the opportunity. It is stated that the butter from Christchurch coste about ljd per lb under the wholesale rate ruling in Auckland. RETAIL SUGAR PRICES. NEW AUCKLAND SCHEDULE.
