SECONDARY EDUCATION

CAPITATION PAYMENT. The particular sections of the Education Act of 1914 dealing with secondary schools classes have been increased by an Qrder-in-Council adding a new part to the Act. Hue is a capitation clause, whereby the Government is authorised to pay, towards the cost of materials used, 2s for every pupil receiving tuition for an hour a week in chemistry, dairy science, home science, or cookery. A capitation of Is is, also authorised for physical measurements, mechanics, physios, botanyagriculture, hygiene and other specified subjects in the study : of which not so much material is required. The new amendment provides for proportional capitation payments where more than one hour per week is given to tho specified classes, but suitable provision must be- made for individual practical work. The Minister for Education may further grant the whole or part of the cost of permanent fittings and apparatus for the use of approved secondary school classes in science and manual training subjects.
