MIDLAND V. HUTT

FORMER’S SUBSTANTIATE READ. Thfe match was commenced on the Hutt ground, and as the game stands when stumps were drawn, the Midlanders are in a very commanding position, and their opponents will find it very\difficult to avert a three-point defeat. Small scoring was the order of the day, and the batting of both teams was not anything like senior form. Batting first, Midland scored 154. They 'did not start too auspiciously, six wickets falling when the scare was 60. Bruoe and Baumber, however, batted more freely, and added 45 runs during their partnership, made by brisk cricket, the. former’s score being 31 and the latter’s 35, and Dind’e tally was 27, made by gopd batting. McGirr bowled well up to the fall of the sixth wicket, but bad the misfortune to strain a muscle of his log, which handicapped him considerably for the 1 remainder of the innings. Nunn also bowled well for the home team. The Hutt team, in their first innings, could only get 48, Ecoleston (13) being the only double-figure scorer. Judd and Patrick performed well with the leather, the former’s bowling being excellent. Glennie, when batting, had to retire, being unfortunately hit on the face- with the ball, which was returned hard by the fieldsman. Dr Hutchison brought o_ff a fine catch in the longfield, which disposed of Efccleston. Judd secured four wickets for 18 runs, and Patrick two for none with the five balls" bowled.
