AN OFFICIAL'S LAPSE
ALLEGED BREACH OF TRUST. THEFT OF PATRIOTIC FUNDS. Five charges of having fraudulently omitted to account for moneys received on behalf of the W hangarei branch, of the Auckland Provincial Patriotic and War Relief Association, and the Whangarei Borough Council, thereby committing theft, were preferred against Albert Edward Marwick, in the Polioe Court, at Auckland, before Mr J. W. Poynton, S.M. (writes the “Times” special correspondent). Three charges related to money received on behalf of the Patriotic Association, and two to money received on behalf of the Borough Council. The amounts ranged from £lO to £328, the total sum involved being in the vicinity of £550. Detective Knight stated that, when interviewed at Thames respecting the first three charges, accused TwiL t statement admitting having received the amounts on behalf of the Patriotic Association, and having failed' to pay the money into the account. It b-d been used to pay debts be bad incurred for various reasons. TT-> was willing to make restitutions Subsequently witness told accused be had heard there was a large deficiency in the funds of the Whangarei Borou*i Council, where accused had been employed as town clerk. Accused said there had been a considerable deficiency when he left, but he had borrowed money and everything had been squared. Witness stated that accused had given him every assistance. Accused pleaded not guilty, and was committed to the S'upreme Court for trial.
