demonstration concert. BIG ATTENDANCE AT TOWN HALT* Last evening the Town «» HW when the concert was given by some or the leading competitors at the reeemt Competitions. The committee made an excellent choice of artists, and tbe result was a remarkably fin* entertainment. There will be another concert to-night, and on Saturday there will be a special children’s matinee. For tomorrow night an invitation has £ee n extended to the Springboks and tbe AllBlacks, and it has been accepted. Proceedings were opened last nignt of j Master John Smith, the clew boy | pianist, who rendered. *The Mill yth ; exceptional skill for one so jennff. i ** T * ! succeeding items were supplied bv those talented little girls who have done so well in the contests—Miss Sinclair Breen (recitation in character. Ambition ); Mss* Alice Chapman (action song, ~TJmbrella Song”); Miss Brtty Jaoomb (operatic dance); Miss Edna ™dw (action song, "Farewett to Childhood”); Miss Kathleen Chappie (humorous sketch. “Wet Day Trouhtos”). The neat soprano solo, 'Roeebude, was tastefully sung by Miss Lilian Hasnam. “The Old Stage Queen” was well recited by Miss Hard Jeffreys, and Miss Zelma Carroll did once again the humorous sketch, "A Trip to Blackpool,” which so delighted audiences in the early stages of the Competitions. One of the most popular items of. the evening was the character sketch, “Joe. the Crossing Sweeper," in which Master J. Watchman excelled himself and deeply touched the hearts of tbe audience. Miss Madge Shearer was seen again in the humorous sketch, “Reach Pies," and Mr L. Inch set the house laughing with his story without words, entitled "The Butcher Boy." Two fine soioe were “Abide With Me," by Miss M. Allan, and "Che Faro," by Miss Irene Hornlblow. An item that evoked rounds of applause was the chorus, “Land to the Leeward, Hoby the champion choir from the Thorndon Marist Bros. School. Other numbers on the bill were: —Piano solo. Mr E. Tanner; dog dance. Mist Thelma McKenaie; memo-soprano solo, "Sognai,” Miss V. Keith; baritone solo, "Captain Mac,” Mr JSi fi. F- Hewitt; "Velio solo. Mr C. Tanner; danoe duo. Misses K. Black and E. Wright; girls’ song. "Big Lady Moon," Miss Joyce Julian; Sfieamitriubhas, Mis# Phyllis McMillan • musical monologue. "Out At Mons,’’ Miss Ofauiee Ritchie; baritone solo, "The Ballad Monger," Mr C. Moss; recitation. "The Ride of Panl Venares,” Mr L. Power: character recital, "Lady Macbeth,” Mrs Enid Frye. THE CHILDREN’S PLAY. The young performers -who acquitted themselves so ablv in the children’s play. ‘Puck and tbe Fairies," at the Competitions on Wednesday night, and gained first prise, were as follow:—Misses Roby Walsh (Oberon), Zena Freeman (Titania), Joy Weston (Puck), Julie Maris. Peggy Macdonald, Jean McLay, and Trixie Luke (fairies). The Judge, Mr Bertram Flohm, remarked that the children bad given a very fine interpretation of a difficult bnt charming scene from Shakespeare’s delightful comedy, "A Midsummer Night’* Dream."
