TO RELIEVE UNEMPLOYED
ASSISTANCE OUT OF TREASURY PROPOSED. ROAD SCHEME CONTEMPLATED. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received September 14, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, September 13. Cabinet’s committee upon employment had a long conference. They considered the Labour Exchange’s report. Altogether , 1,527,000 are wholly unemployed, about 400,000 are working short time and 290,000 have exhausted their unemployment benefits, being out of work more than twenty-two weeks, but will be entitled to a further sixteen weeks’ pay -from November 2nd. Cabinet decided that there must be no extension of individual doles, which is the worst means of relieving' unemployment. The committee recommends assistance to local authorities out of the Treasury. It is understood; they contemplate thus spending £10,000,000. The committee discussed a large road scheme as a means of relieving the situation.
