“SOCCER” FOOTBALL

AUCKLAND V. WELLINGTON. LADLES' SOCCER, "Soccer*' followers are to be web catered for at the Basin Reserve on Saturday next. Wellington has been called upon to defend the Brown Shield against the elect of Auckland. The northerners are coming down with what has been described as a "hot lot." Included in the team are two Royal Navy men (Corbett; centre-half, an‘d Hooper, centre-forward, of H.M.S. Philomel), who are said to be very fine players. In addition there are Tr©ma-in, Corrin, and Innes, who are well known to the Wellington public. The latter was in last year's North Island team which decisively defeated the South island. The local defence has been strengthened by . the inclusion of McKenzie, of Thistle. Rowlands {Thistle) replaces Jones, who is on the injured list, as left-half, and the team is thoroughly representative. Given 1 " a fine day and a dry ground, the game should be fast and scientific. Opinions as to whiclf is the better team are equally divided, and the result will probably be in doubt until the final whistle sounds. Mr Thornley, -of Nelson, will control the game. At 1.15 the two leading teams in the third division (Institute A and Marist) will meet, and as thie game will decide the competition, it is bound to be keenly contested. The public will also have an opportunity of judging the vexed question as to the suitability of football for the .fair sex. as at 1.45 p.m. the AoteaLadies Football Club will place two teams in the field. The ladies have been jfhthusiasticaily practising for some weeks past, and have made surprising progress. The game is sure to prov% both novel and exciting.
