PETONE AFFAIRS

MEETING OF BOROUGH: COUNCIL. A meeting of the Fetone Council was held last evening. There were present— The Mayor {Mr J. W. McDw&n) and Councillors 0. P. Broeklebank, M. Ford, J. Churchouse, R. H. Jones, W. Hay, A. Anderson, D. Bedingfield, and G. Cook. ABOLITION OF COAL CONTROL. Advice was received from the Officer-in-Charge of the Coal Control Department, that owing to the present -favourable position of supplies. Cabinet had decided to terminate the activities of the Coal Control Department, and the various coal trade committees at the end of the present month. The officer thanked the gas manager of the Fetone works (Mr H. Appleyard) for the assistance and co-operation that he had given the department. * AUDIT CHARGES, In reply to an inquiry by the council respecting the increase in the scale of audit charges the Department of Internal .Affairs stated that the charge for audit inspection had been fixed in 1886, and was based on the salaries and expenses existing at that time. The increase had been made to meet the loss made by the department. WORKERS' DWELLINGS. The Labour Department asked the council to expedite the work of -extending? the drainage to workers’ dwellings, which were in course of erection in the borough. It was stated that twelve dwellings were nearing completion. Before granting the request the council decided to inquire if more houses were to he constructed in ctder that a comprehensive plan of reticulation might be furnished by the engineer. HOSPITAL SUBSIDIES. Regarding a communication received from the Westland County Council asking for co-operation in urging tho Government to increase its subsidy to hosboards. It was decided to support the proposal. < MUNICIPAL TENNIS LAWNjS. An application was received from the local district high .school for permission for the pupils to play tennis on the municipal lawns. It was resolved to the children to play in the afternoon, tilt 5 o’clock, provided adults were not waiting to use the courts. The lawns are not to be available for Hiefh School students on Saturday afternoon on holidays. The caretaker of the recreation ground is to be instructed to prevent adults playing tennis on the asphalt court in the main reserve, the court in question being for the use of children only. Permission was given the Petone Rowing Club to play a football match with Wellington Rowing Club on Saturday, September 3rd.
