QUEENSLAND MEAT
UNFAIR COMPETITION WITH THE ARGENTINE. A STRONG~COAIPLAINT. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received August'2l, 5.5 -p.m.) LONDON, August 20. Air J. M. Hunter, Agent-General for Queensland, interviewed by the “Meat Trade Journal,” said that the serious condition <o£ the beef trade must be ended or mended quickly. It was impossible for the industry to stand the present losses. The preference which the trade and the consuming public was showing for Argentine beef reflected no credit on their health or heads. Prior to the war, Argentine and Queensland beef sold at the same price, and now Queensland beef was 3d per lb below Argentine. The only apparent reason was that Australia was self-sacrificdng enough to allow the army- to have the meat during the war. There was no complaint regarding the quality of Queensland meat, which was subject to the same rigid Government inspection. Australia gave British goods preference of I2J per cent., and was entitled at least to equality of treatment with foreign tradere.
