SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. Madame Melba, the famous prima donna, is a passenger for Sydney by the Niagara, which arrived at Auckland yesl terdav. Mrs Martin Elgar (Featherston) is in town, and "staying at the Midland. Mrs C. At the Church of Christ, Vivian street, recently, the wedding took place between Mr James A. Martin, eldest son of Mr and*Nlrs A. Martin, late of Christchurch, to ALiss Gladys Muriel Dixon, second daughter of Mr and Airs F. K. Dixon, of Douglas street, Wellington. The ceremony was perforated by the Kev. Mr Ira Paternoster. The "bride, who was given away by her. father, wore a dainty frock of ivory crepe de chine, with veil clasped with orange blossom?, and carried a bouquet of white carnations and freezias. Miss Ruby Dixon, sister of the bride, was the attendant maid, and wore a pretty frock of lemon ! crepe do chine, with black velvet trimmings. . Her hat was of black tulle with gold trimmings, and she carried a bouquet of gold and brown chrysanthemums. Air Gerald Bell, of Wellington, was the best man. A reception was afterwards held by the bride's parents at Scott's tearooms, where a large number* ■ friends' 'were entertained. Later, Mr I and airs Martin left for the north. On Thursday afternoon Miss Una Carter gave another demonstration on the advantage of using Glaxo for household purposes. Yankee cake and coconut filling, savoury omelette, Bermaline bread, Russian fish tart, caramel custard, and walnut dreams comprised the subjects of the demonstration. j

The monthly meeting of the ladies' {auxiliary committee of the Wellington branch of the Navy League will be held on Tuesday, August 2nd, 1221, in the League's office, Vickers Souse, Woodward street, at 3.30 p.m. Mrs Kaye, president, and Miss Florence Birch, secretary of the N.Z Y.W.C.A. National Field Committee left by the Manuka on Thursday to attend the Australasian Y.W.O. A. Conference in bydney, when delegates from' the whole of Australasia will meet to plan forward steps for the extension of Y.W.C.A work amongst girls and young women for the next year. Miss Ella Fair, national field business secretary, will be in charge of the national field office until their reti m. Mrs Wilson and Miss Geddes, of tho Auckland Y.W.0.A., leave Auckland by the TJlimaroa on Tuesday to attend the same conference.

PIONEER CLUB. THE SINGING CIRCLE. The first entertainment given by the singing circle of the Pioneer Club took place last night, the proceeds to be given to the furnishing fund. There were a large number of members and their friends present, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. For some little time members have discussed the advisability of turning two rooms into one, but nothing definite has been settled. Certainly the one room was all too small for the large number of guests present last night. The singing circle presented Mrs Ginn, their president, with a token of appreciation at this their first concert, in the form of a bouquet of autumn flowers and a Danish plaque, the colourings of jade and brown, being most beautiful. Mrs Gooder, the secretary of the circle, make the presentation. A short musical programme followed: —Pianoforte duet by Mrs Vickery and Miss Garlick, songs were given by Mrs Townlery, Mrs Shaw, Mrs Ginn,- Miss • Knight and Miss Price. Two' glees were rendered by the members of the musical circle. The competition was won by Mr Shaw, the prize being a piece of pottery. 'Many donations were received during the evening from members Jpward ■ this fund. A delicious supper was served, and Dr. Agnes Bennett, the president of the club, congratulated the singing circle upon the suocess of their first entertainment.

SAILORS' FRIGID SOCIETY. Yet another pleasant evening was arranged for the seafarers 4fi the Sailors' Friend Society on Thursday, when the hostess. Miss M. Anderson brought a strong l band of performers, who were received with enthusiasm. Contributions were made to the programme by Mrs Torino, the Misses Nation, and Phillips, and Messrs Anderson, Brown, Williams, and Ryan. Mrs Tong© was at the piano. Gifts for the competitions came from the hostess, and went to the Paparoa and Garbota. The book shelves are depleted in the institute. Gifts of discarded reading would bo much valued.

VIOLET DAY. HELP FOR THE MOTHERS. A most perfect winter day dawned to welcome the busy helpers for this worthy cause, amd stalls were .set up early and ladened with the most inviting homemade produetis and a mos;t wonderful collection of flowers, which quickly found purchasers. The large number of energetic workers must feel pleased with the results obtained* as most of the stalls: had very little, left quite early in the afternoon. MrFrank Young was best man. After the Ceremony the-wedding breakfast was hold at the Empire Hotel, where the bride's mother received only, relatives and intimate friends. Airs Aloncrief was wearing a navy tailored costume, a blue toque, with touche-*© of blue and pink, and black furs. Her bouquet was of violets and purple pansies. Owing to the long journey from the bridegroom's mother was unable to be present. Among the guests were Airs John Young (the bride's grandmother). Air and Mrs Clement Watson, Mr'C. G. Watson and Aliss JB. Watson, Airs AluUin (sister of the bridegroom). Dr. Afullin (Ashburton), and the Aliases IJous-Martin. The usual toasts were honoured, and Air and Mrs Turnbull left later for the north, the bride travelling in a brown velour costume and brown hat with touches of gold.

Y.W.C.A. NEWS. EXTENDING THE HOSTEL?. Plans are being made in Auckland by the Y.W.C.A. Board of Directors to raise money to extend the Y.W.C.A. hostel building to accommodate sixty more girls, as there is a great urgency in that city for extension in the direction of housing girls, and the Y.W.C.A. feels that with its world-wide experience it can provide comfortable homes for girls at reasonable rates. The Y.W.C.A. Hostels in Wellington are kept full, and during the month 99 visitors stayed for a longer or shorter iHrae, fourteen overseas immigrant© have been accommodated during the month, and the total number of permanent boarders now in residence is 85. Great interest has been aroused in one of the hostels in Wellington by tho formation of a musical and dramatic club, which has an enthusiastic membership. The inauugural meeting of the club took, the form of a fancy dress party, which was greatly enjoyed. The members are now hard at work preparing a pretty little play written "by oue °f the girls* Miss Whittle, entitled "When Dreams Com© True."

A VISITOR FROM CHINA. The interest of the Y.W.C.A. in New Zealand in the work the Y.W.C.A. is doing in China and other foreign lands has been stimulated recently by the visit of Miss Ella AlacNeil, secretary for China, who was in. New Zealand on furlough. Miss AlacNeil visited tho associations in Invercargill, Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington, Palmerston North, Gisborne, and Auckland, and told of her work and of the.life of girls in China. In Auckland three hundred women were present at a big at home when Lady Jellicoe, the patroness of the Y.W.C.A. in New Zealand, was present as the guest of 1 honour to meet Miss Mac Neil and lo hear her fine international message.

On Tuesday next, August 2nd, Dr D b. Wylie, C.AI.G., # C.'B.E., will deliver a lecture on "Social Medicine," in the Ked Cross Chambers, Dixon street, which should be particularly interesting. Mr J.
