NAURU PHOSPHATES
POSITION IMPROVING. “It is only j ust now thatihe Government influence in respect to tlie purchase of Nauru Island phosphates ia being felt,” said Dr. C. J. Reakes (Di-roctor-Geneiral of Agriculture) at the Farmers’ Union Conference yesterday. “So far only two cargoes of phosphates from Nauru have arrived in Now Zealand, but now that the Government has completed arrangements the position will rapidly become very much better. I do rot desire to give credit to the Government for what it does not deserve, but whftt the Government had done in the direction of securing supplies of phosphates from these two islands was one of the very best things in the interests of farmers. “The difficulty in the past,” continnod Dr. Reakes, “has been the arranging of freightage, but cargoes of not less than 4000 tons have now been arranged for, and the price to farmers will depend entirely upon the amount of handling that is required. If the nhosphate has to be stored and sent out in small lots the cost must naturally be enhanced. The cost of freight is falling, and the last contract was at 81s per ton, and following shipments will be lower still.”
