A PLEA FOR THE BLIND
(To the Editor “Nus. TSmadL'^V Sir, —Think of the forrowa of th, blind. Were we to he told that within ia certain length of time .wo should be deprived of one of onr senses, and gh' en choice, would anyone H-tmLi ta travel through life in utter darknenP The lot of the blind is a sad one. How difficult fur them te earn an Independent living. Unable to rTrmprrtiii in the commercial, professional, or labour world, they are g far consideration from tiie people of New Zealand. For a short period you have s chance to sign a petition for punnione for the blind. What petition more worthy p What will busy, bustling Wellington do? Christchurch was slow. The prominent business houses never even thought to take a petition list unto themselves. Churches plumped in almost every street of the “Holy city of the south” never raised a voice in the matter. How much we enjoy to visit an art gallery and criticise the noble attempts made by some to reproduce Nature. We stand before a “Rising Moon,’* but she ain’t rilin’. We look at the painted stars, hut they ain't twinklin’. We come oat dirraeti, fied, and gaze at the glorious rising moon in reality, and when someone remarks, “It would make a boeca football,” surely a point in the argument is scored by an emphatical “No!” it’i too good to be kicked; it might make a brilliant tennis ball.” How immensely tiie people of New Zealand enjerf their sport and recreations. It is well to be a “sport” and well to help the blind people (who cannot enjoy sports) with a real bosca pension. Yon may covet the moon to kick at, or kick at your football and burst it, but don’t kick at your pen; just use it, and sign your name to the blind people’s petition. A. BONNINGTON. Christchurch, duly 17th.
