POST-WAR DISABILITY

RELIEF TO THE AFFLICTED MONTHLY MEETING OF WAR BELIEF EXECUTIVE! VARIOUS APPLICATIONS. , The executive of the Wellington War Relief Association met yesterday afternoon, Mr A. Macintosh presiding^ The finance report showed an excess of expenditure over income during the month of £298 5s sd; the expenditure •was .£1214 14s sd, and the income £916 9s. At June 30th there were credits to various accounts at the bank amounting to £2336 17s lid. Investments totalled .£47,593 3S lOd. The total availab 1 © funds at June 30th were, therefore, ,£49.950 Is 9d. APPLICATIONS DEALT WITH;. The applications committee reported that since the last meeting of the executive, a month ago, 185 applications f for assistance had been dealt with. The total number of claims received during the -period was 349, comprising 56 new applications and 293 renewals and reconsiderations. Of the new applications, 28 were the responsibility of other societies and 28 the committee’s responsibility, together with four Australian and four Imperial cases. There were still 164 cases under action, of which 96 were for the consideration of the local committee, the latter including two Australian, and one Imperial case. x There was no alteration in the diversity of the claim* submitted to the com* mittee, which included requests for provision of tools of trade, payment of maternity expenses, of rent, of tradesmen's accounts, of board and lodgings, etc.; although there was small b reduction an the average number of claims being received, it was now much more difficult to deal with them. This was partly due to the complex nature of the claims and partly to the difficulty—as the result of the lapse of time since the Armistice —in establishing the actual degree of physical impairment and the resultant financial loss attributable to war service. FINANCIAL MATTERS.

Twelve applications were considered by the finance committee during the month.. Of these, one application for loan of ,£156 6s 8d "with which to .pay overdue tradesmen’s accounts in. respect to a small (business established at Petoone, was granted, the security being a signed agreement not to allow the stock to fall below the value of £3OO during, the currency of the loan, and a biii-of-sale over the stock. 6ix applications were in respect to the acquisition of residential property, the value aggregating .£969. Of these, three were declined, no economic loss being evident ; one needed to further action, and the remaining two were granted, the security being registered second mortgage. A further application was for a loan of £2OO, with which to pay the applicant’s brother a year’s wages, but there was no economio loss nor evidence of permanent partial disablement, and as the claim was in no wav attributable to war service, it was declined. A loan of £146 for the purchase of a milking machine and another of <£loo in respect to necessary improvements to a farm were granted. The two remaining were in respect to the readjustment of repayments. There are five applications yet to be dealt with, the total amount involved being <£Boo. Three were in respect to the acquisition of residential property; one in connection with a farm; one in respect to the disposal of a Ford motor-car in Auckland, and the fifth for temporary suspension of repayments. The reports were adopted.
