GERMAN EXPERIMENT
MAKING TWO BLARES OF GRASS GROW INSTEAD OF ONE. ' GREAT POSSIBILITIES. By Telegraph—Press.. Assn.—Copyright. _ Reuter’s Telegram. * (Received July 20, 1.35 a.m.) LONDON, July 18. The “Westminster Gazette’s’’ Berlin correspondent' , states that German scientists are working on the problem of making two blades of grass grow instead of one application of carbonic aoid gas. Experiments in turning ground blast furnaces into glasshouses and sown fields have been eo successful that special nurseries have been established in connection with the Hugo Stinnes smelting works at Horst. Plant substance 'is increased by gas from 50 to 300 per cent. Gases from 1100 tflhs of coke are sufficient to produce’ 4000 tons of edible plant matter, but as vast equipment and distributing tubes aro necessary, the experimenters see immediate practical use only in fertilising certain root and high-valuo food plants in small areas.
