After further discussion, the motion was withdrawn, and it was decided to write stating that the hoard recognised the value of the association’s work, but it could not see its way clear, to make a grant.

Gratification was expressed by the Mayor (Mi- R. A. Wright, M.P‘.,) yesterday at the satisfactory \attendance a* the free organ recital at the Town Hall on Sunday evening—the first of the series which was recently decided upon as a meama of popularising the concerts. The voluntary collection taken up amounted tin £9 ills s£d, which is regarded, aa very satisfactory, especially isi about twice as much as isi usually taken under the ordinary system of charging for admission. The attendance on Sunday night was estimated at about 800 people.

The annual session of the Anglican Synod spent most of yesterday’s sitting in committee. It sat till after 10 p.m., when it adjourned through want of a quorum.
