OBITUARY

MR THOMAS PAVITT. DEATH OF WELL-KNOWN CITIZEN. Another of Wellington’s old identities. Mr Thomas Pavitt, passed away at In* residence, Brougham :street, on. Sunday night, after having spent a long and useful life in the Dominion. His death was tine; to an attack of pneumonia, rhe deceased gentleman hod made a #*ery large circle of friends since coming *o New Zealand over seventy years ago, and. deep regret will be felt by his many friends and relatives, among whom are many of the members of the Wellesley Club. One of the Tale Mr Pavitt’s most important undertakings was the scheme for the construction of the railway on the West Coast,i the work on which is now in course of completion. He was one of the promoters of the Midland Railway . Company, and was largely responsible for the sending of delegates to England to raise money for the commencement of the West Coast railway- These delegates were Messrs W. Acton-Adams (Christchurch), W. B. Perceval (Christchurch), and Fell (Nelson). The deceased gentleman came to New Zealand with his parents and their family in 1850, in the ship Monarch \(347 tQpas), landing n'i Akaroa on April 2nd. The family settled at Robinson's Bay, and commenced sawmilling. Their work include 1 the building of two schooners, the Seabird and the Flirt, which traded round Banks Peninsula. After being'burnt out in 1860, the family went to Christchurch, where the late Mr Thomas Pavitt, with one of his brothers, commenced business as a timber merchant. In 1885 he left the business, and, two years later, was emi>loyed by the New Zealand Railway Company" on the West Coast. Who*, this undertaking terminated in 1892, he came to Wellington, and had since resided with his sons.
