UNEMPLOYMENT
LABOUR BUREAU FIGURES 256 APPLICATIONS A WEEK. The Government Labour Bureau re. ported yesterday to a “New Zealand Times” reporter that a fairly large number of applications had been received from men who were seeking employment during the week. The majority of those who applied were labourers, but the figures disclosed that a number of tradesmen were also out of work. Considering tho time of the year and that there is a stringency in the money market, the number of men who were out «f work was not looked upon by the officers of the department as abnormal. During the week ending yesterday 256 applications had been received, 122 being from men■ who were not skilled tradesmen, and of the total 31 were found employ ment. TRADESMEN WANTING WORK. The bureau received inquiries from a number of tradesmen, but there was only one application from a painter. The applications were as follow:—Carpenters, 7; painters, 1; engine-drivers, 7; bootmakers, 5; farmhands, 10; fitters and turners, 5; storemen, 6. Twelve drivers also applied for employment.
