July 14—Waimate District Hunt dub July 21—South Canterbury Hunt Club. July 28. 30—Gisborne R.C. July 30—Christchurch Hunt Club. NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By "Carbine.”) Wanganui Steeplechase this week. Simon was given a run over the small fences at Hawera, but he did not jump well. Velociform, who paid a great price at Egmont, is a good-looking gelding by Quinaforte—Velocity. He is trained at Wavorley by H. Rayner for Mr T. Peapells. Isabel will be bard at Wanganui. Marqueteur was a trifle unlucky in the Mcßae Memorial on the first day of the Egmont meeting. Turning for the straight he was shut in on the rails, and when 'he got dear it was too late. Paddington Green did not get a run in the Tongahoe Hurdles at Egmont. He was saddled and "taken into the birdcage. He had shoes on and was sent away to have them removed, but as a blacksmith was not immediately available he was not taken out again. The Australian Jockey Club has licensed L. H. Hewitt; the well-known. New Zealand horseman. The race he had at Hawera will do Tame Pox a lot of good. In the open ten furlong event he was the pacemaker, end held command'for the great part of bhe journey. The A.J.C. has appointed Major Dudley A. Smith, D. 5.0., as judge for the premier racing club, as well as the four other metropolitan, courses. Major Smith has had considerable experience as racing judge in the western district of NewSouth Wales. He is a nephew of Major Claude Smith, of Nandillyan Heights, who, up to a few years ago, was a prominent breeder in New South Wales. If he keeps sound. Sir Posher looks sure to win a raco soon. He as jumping splendidly, and when he fell at Hawera it was because he was tiring. lord Nagar won without any trouble at Hawera, *»nd he should earn more stake money this season if he is well placed. His placing may have to be studied, as the good horses are running themselves into form, and his degree of superior condition will soon disappear. Despite the fact that Whangarei Racing Club made a profit of .£3635 6s 9d from its meeting held at Avondale last year, some of the members were evidently not satisfied, for several of the items relating to the expense of running the fixture were questioned. Those in doubt hardly seemed to realise the difference in the cost of running a meeting on a course like Avondale and one like Kensington Park. However (says the Auckland "Star"), the secretary and president soon satisfied their curiosity, and the balance-sheet was adopted unanimously. P. Hartigan, a well-known trainer in England, was killed at Liverpool »xn March through falling through the window of his bedroom at night. Hartigan, who had only arrived at Liverpool the same day with his wife, is believed to have caught his knee against the low sill of the open window, and overbalanced. In referring .to Mr Hartigan's death, a London caper said: "He was a devout Roman Catholic, and one of his last acts was to build a chapel at the stables at Ogbourne— in conjunction with his wife and sister-in-law —in order that he and his family, as well as the stable lads, might be able to attend their religious duties, for the nearest Catholic chapel to the stables was at Swindon, nine miles away. The three members of the family bore the entire expense of the building. The singular dispensation of Providence was that the first service to he held in the chapel (which had only just be° n completed) was the requiem mass ce..brated for Mr Hartigan." A thrilling race in an aeroplane to beat the clock with the Liverpool Grand National -film occurred after the conclusion of the race. Camera men hustled the exposed film iijio a Waiting aeroplane ten minutes aftey Shaun Spadali had passed the post. At 4000 feet a 30 miles On 'hour gale was encountered, which blew the machine out of its course, and it was forced to land at Ipswich to discover its whereabouts. Darkness was coming on, and with his engine working at its full revolutions, the pilot flew on to London, eventually being forced by the failing light to land in a. small field near Romford, narrowly missing a ditch. Cars carried t)he film to the developing rooms in town, where they were developed, edited, and subtitled with record speed, and were shown in cinemas in London before to o clock.
