After a week’s conferences between the Labour Department and the shipping strikers, the Government’s arbitration efforts have been suspended, following the refusal by unionists to accept a 15 per cent, wage reduction, which the shipping hoard insists upon. The latter is now preparing foi a lengthy strike. The strikers claim that only eighteen vessels have sailed from New York since the strike began. (Received Alay 11, 9.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, Alay 11. At Baltimore striking seamen numbering 1500 desperadoes made several fierce attacks on non-union workers, chiefly negroes, on the wharves yesterday. Violent conflicts resulted, during which pistols and knives were used. A dozen men were badly injured. One hundred were arrested. The police were temporarily overpowered during a heavy assault in the financial district, but quiet was restored by the evening. The Merchant and Aliners’ Company’s steamer Persian was partly burned at the docks. The cause is unknown.
