“MUST BE STOPPED”

THEFTS FROM BOARDINGHOUSES AND HOTELS. YOUNG MAN “SENT TO GAOD. “We have got to stop this thieving from boardinghouses and hotels,’’ remarked Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M. when sentencing a young man named Alphonsus James Halahan to 14 days’ imprisonment with hard labour yesterday. The accused appeared on a charge of stealing at Masterton, on Thursday last, a portmanteau, overcoat, and sac coat to the total value of £lO, and belonging to Alfred ry-Chief-Detective Ward, for the police, stated that the goods had been taken from a boardinghouse at Masterton. The accused, however, had been found, in Wellington wearing the overcoat and had disposed of the other goods to* a second-hand dealer for the sum of 20s. The young man had first come to New Zealand from Australia in December, 1919, when he had been a member of Wirth’s Oircus. He had been following the occupation of window cleaner since his arrival in New Zealand. His character was such that the Chief Detective would not recommend the accused for probation. For the accused, Mr C. A. L. Treadwell said the young man would plead guilty. It was his first offenoe and if given a chance he would, no doubt, 1 not come before the court again. He had four years war service- to his credit.

The magistrate: What would you say if someone walked into your home and helped himself to whatever he liked ? Mr Ward stated that the offence was doubly serious on. account of the fact that, being a boardinghouse, the blame was liable to be thrown on others.
