THE MAYORALTY

MR HISLOP’S ADDRESS. Last night a* the Library, South Wellington, Mr Hislop, a candidate for the Mayoralty, addressed a. meeting. Mr Hislop replied to statements made hy Mr Wright' to .the effect that he had acted inconsistently in forming part of a deputation -in. favour of purchasing Day’s Bay property, and said it was to be regretted: that candidates should misrepresent statements of their opponents. His criticism was not directed to the total expenditure which increased the debit in general account, but to that part of it which' was _not represented hy any asset. For instance, during the year March. 1919. to March, 1920. genera l '“account was put further in debit by £57,000; , £36,000 went in various things, some good, some questionable, but for something of value, but ,£21.000 represented nothing; and it was the accumulation of this deficit that he objected to. .He discussed the milk and house questions. and answered a number of questions. A vote of thanks and confidence was carried. COUNCILLOR L. McKENZTE. Councillor Len McKenzie is to address the first public meeting of his Mayoralty campaign at Karori on Monday evening next. • MR WRIGHT AT MARANTCT. Mr R. A. Wright addressed the. electors at the Maranui Church, Lyall Boy, last evening. There was a good attendance, and Mr T- - Fathers was voted: to the chair. The speaker, amongst other subjects, dealt with the 'sand drift question at Lyall Bay; and admitted that it was a serious problem which up to the present had not been solved. Drastic steps on the part of property owners were necessary, otherwise many properties would be seriously injured The matter had been before the finance committee, which was awaiting a report on the. question. A number of questions were answered, and a vote of thanks to'the speaker was moved bv Mr Burgovne-Thomas, seconded by Mr Collins, and. carried. Mr R. A. Wright will address the electors at St. Hilda’s Hall. Island Bay, tonight, at 8.30 o’clock.
