WATERSIDE DIFFICULTY
“STOP-WORK” MEETING. SECRET BALLOT TO BE HELD. The .special “stop-work” meeting of the Wellington Waterside Workers’ Union, held in the Harbour Board X store waiting-room yesterday morning, was attended by about 1500 members. Mr L. Glover, president, occupied the chair. The Watersiders’ Federation representatives —Messds L. Glover J. Roberts, J. G. Bruce and T. Brindle —delivered a report regarding the result of the negotiations at the recent conferences concerning the waterside trouble with the employers, Presided over by the Right Hon. W. F. Massey. After a lengthy discussion, and when many questions had been asked and answered, the meeting adopted the federation’s recommendation that a secret ballot be held to-morrow and on Saturday to decide whether the terms of settlement of the recent difficulty on the waterfront he accepted. The balloting will he as follows:—To-morrow, from 7.30 a.m. till 1 p.m., and from 2 p.m. till 5.30 p.m.; on Saturday, from 7.30 a.m. till 12.30 p.m. The union’s returning officer, Mr J. Smart, will have charge of the ballot. It is understood that similar ballots will be held by the other waterside unions throughout New Zealand. The ballot papers are returnable at the Waterside Federation’s office not later than next Tuesday. A resolution was carried thanking the Ngahauranga meat workers for their donation of six sheep during the time the members of the union were idle. The meeting terminated at 11.40 a.m.
