Marshal Foch contributes an article to the new journal, “Revue De France,” explaining the German defeat. He draws a parallel between the German armies in 1916 and 1814. Blncher, York, and Kleist were inspired by holy passion; but Ludendorff was an exceTTent staff officer, and nothing more; he lacked the true comprehenJaion of the character of national wax, | whereas the Allies inspired the loftiest 'spirit of sacrifice, their confidence and ardour making the struggle a | real national war, and providing the : principal cause for victory. What ! availed Ludendorff's professional qualiities against this spirit? He and his .brother officers w.ere excellent troopdirecting machines, but they lacked the internal flame and had no ideals, only vulgar materialism.
