AutumnNOTES AND COMMENTS. <By ''Carbine.”) Masterton acceptances close to-day. Rangitikei acceptances arc due thi6 evening. For the Manawatu autumn meeting, which takes place on April 13th and util nominations close at 9 o.m. to-morTow. At the -amp time forfeits are due for the Thirteenth Manawatu Sires' Produce Stake* and the Seventeenth Manawatu Stakes. Great progress has been made with the improvement of the Marlborough Club s course, and Wellington visitors to Blenheim last nock were surprised by the change since the previous meeting. Matatua made a very easy thing of 'the Marlborough Cup. He was early in the lead and with tlfb exception of Pitch Hark nothing ever got near him. In the straight he went away from Bitch Hark and won very comfortably. There was a great finish in the open six furlong event on the concluding day of the Marlborough meeting, when Bestir. Barleycorn and Gold Problem crossed the lino almost together. The decision went to Bestir, with Gold Problem second. Gold Problem came out dn the last event of the fixture and made a stroll of it. It was a case of ''landed at last” with Pente in the McVay Memorial at Napier on Saturday. The sister to Karo has beeu the medium o f considerable speculation of late, but up till Saturday it was some time since she had won. She will have plenty of supporters if she takes ou Isobel in the Great Northern Oaks. So far very few rising two-.vear-olds have out in an appearance at .Ellers]ie, and though it is yet, a bit too early to judge, it looks ns if the Auckland stables mill- be weak in youngsters this year (says the "Star”). Improvement is badly needed at Blenheim in the arrangements made for hoisting the results. The present numbers are very hard to Tead a little way off. The owners of Mermin and Gloaming have easy money awiting them at Riccarton.

Some support was accorded Mosthenes in the Telegraph Hack Handicap at Napier on Saturday, but ho finished out of a place. The suspension imposed on T. Chaplin by the stewards of the Takapnna Jockey Club last November has expired, and he is now ruling work again at EUerslie. During his suspension Chaplin took on a job at bushfelling, and it appears to have kept, him in good form. Ruruwai, who won the Kuao Handicap at Napier Park on Saturday, is a youngster with a great reputation. Quite recently, on the strength of bis track work, he was backed for very big money, but let hie party down. On Saturday he just won.- Racing will improve him and, later on he should'be good. The stakes in the five furlong event at Blenheim looked like easy money for Sweet Memory, but for some strange reason she (was started in the six furlong race. Burdened with 9.13 she got out in front, and led well into the straight. Passing the stand she stopped and quickly faded out of the contest. The Thames Jockey Club has nominated the Hon. J. Gordon Coates, M.P., as one of the representatives of the Auckland district clubs on fho New Zealand Racing Conference, and Messrs F. J. Dargaville K. Rennie and G. L. Stead as representatives on the Auckland district committee. A Press Association telegram from Timaru states that Captain A. _B. T. Rhodes and Miss Ainini Rhodes have offered the A. and P. Association a 100 guinea challenge cup for competition by the South Island Hunt Clubs’ teams of three horses over fair hunting country, in connection with the Timaru A. and P. Show, and suggested that the association offer an additional money-prize. The offer was referred to a committee to consult the donors as to lie conditions before final acceptance.
