AMATEUR ATHLETICS

COMBINED SLUES’MEETING GOOD SPORT AT BASIN' RESIiRVE. An athletic meeting was held at th« Basin .‘RoseiVq on £>a-tiwday afternoon under the auspice* of the Wellington Amateur Athletic Club, the Athletic Sports Club, and the Victoria University Amateur Athletic Club, and. a very enjoyable ©parts gathering it proved to be. The weather was perfect, the track in excellent condition, and there were about 3000 people present to witness some of our foremost athletes in action. Ail the eveuts were keenly contested, but in some races there were so many competitors that the back-markers found it impossible to do justice to themselves. This was especially noticeable in the 140 yards Ladies* Bracelet, which event was won on the post by C. V. Goddard from the 29 yards mfeuk. In the 880 • us handicap also there were- over 30 .miners. The winner, N. TV. Craig,

• ; ;ni tho favourable handicap of l 5) yards, and breasted the tape in lmin 55 ■ l-ssec. As Taylor, the club ‘'crack/' took six seconds m-ore to cover the full distance at the New Zealand championship recently, it will be recognised that the slightest interference to the back-mark-ers ou Saturday was fatal. P. Nlunro put up a great performance in putting the shot 45 feet 1 inch, thus breaking the Australasian and New Zealand record of 45 feet 01 iuches, put up by Ik If. Caughey in 1914. 11. K- Wilson, the champion hurdler, was called on to give ttwav as much as 16 yards in the 120 yards hurdles, and although he defeated the limit man, he went, under to Whyte and Jackson, each of whom was in receipt of 12 yards start and one hurdle down. The former won in 14 3-ssec, and there is little doubt that Wilson's time was better than the existing record of 15 3-10sec* There" were only two disappointing features in tho whole meeting, and the more important was tho necessity for disqualifying G. H. Wakelin, a competitor in the three miles handicap. This young runner, who lias been filling minor positions in similar races right through the season, was always goine strongly in tho race on. Saturday, and taking the lead in the last lap he simply ran away from the field, and, in the excitement of the moment, he jumped the tape. The stewards had no other option than to disqualify him and award the race to Craig. . Subsequently the committee decided to give the unfortunate runner a special prize. Tho other disappointment was tho failure of the Masterton cyclists to nut in an appearance, thus necessitating The abandonment of these -popular events. Apart from these incident#, the fixture was a huge success. Responsible officials were:— THE CAPABLE OFFICIALS. Referee, Mr A. Marryatt; track judges, Messrs J. N. • Mallard, W. A.
