Tho Price Investigation Committee is at present investigating a number of complaints that have reached it respecting the prices charged in Auckland for matches, especially wax matches, which are put up in boxes known as plaids, slides, and 250’s, the last-named being the tin boxes. In the course of its investigations the tribunal made the interesting discovery that these so-called 250 boxes contained an average of only 156 matches per box. As a result of its inquiries tho tribunal intends to present a special report to the Board of Trade on the price of wax matches, together with certain recommendations. A flour famine was threatened in Auckland as a result of the waterside dispute, the stocks available in the city on Wednesday being sufficient for a few days only. The danger was averted, however, by the settlement of the dispute. Referring to this matter, Mr P. Virtue stated that the Northern Roller Mills had been practically rationing bakers and grocers with flour for over a week. The stocks held on Wednesday would have enabled bakers to continue operations for only a few days longer. Owt-. and 501 b -bags of flour were withdrawn from the market over a week ago, only 251 b, 12ilb, and 611 b bags being sent out. This was done to prevent hoarding, and to make existing stocks go round.
