AYHLL-COX T EST EL RACE ON SATURDAY. WELLINGTON WINS SHIELD. Tiic Rowing Association was again fortunate in regard to weather on Saturday afternoon, when the Mothes Shield contest was decided; After a calm i morning a southerly came up in tlie afternoon, and although, the water was rather lumpy for the lirst few races, the conditions were very favourable. The Wellington Rowing Club succeeded in carrying oft the shield with 34 points (6 fiists and 2 seconds). The Star Boating Club came next with 20 points (2 firsts and 5 seconds), while Petone showed rather poorly with only 9 points {1 first and 2 seconds). The Wellington Rowing Club’s performance was exceptionally good, and the club d» to bo congratulated on its success, particularly after its somewhat poor showing at recent inter-club regattas. In presenting the shied after the last race 'Mr F. W. Mothes (donor of the shield) said that he had great pleasure in congratulating the winners, for although he would have liked to see 'hie own club—Petone —successful, he could not but admit that the Wellington Rowing Club had outclassed the others with ease. He hoped that the shield would move from club to club during the next few years, as this would most effectively assist his object of encouraging the sport in this centre. My Symonde (captain of the Wellington Club) replied briefly. The winning club was heartily cheered by the Petone and Star members, and all three clubs united in cheers for the donor of the shield. The details of the various races are as follow: — MAIDEN FOURS. One mile. Wellington Rowing Club—A. Dalgleish (str), T. Porter (3), G- W ilson (2), J Thomas (bow), H. liognuda (cox) 1 Star Boating Club—E'. Diehl (str), F. G- Obom (3), H- R. Herd (2), W. F. Robb (bow), C. Webb (cox) ... 2 After a false start, the crews were sent away well. Petone No. 1 and Star talcing the lead. With half a male gone Star took the lead from Petone, but were soon overhauled by _ Wellington, who went ahead easily, leaving Star ( Und Petone to fight out seoond place. Macauley (3), H. Hyde (2), R- Hayes (bow), H. Bognudu. (cox) 2 Wellington broke away at the start and were not recalled, soon taking a great lead! At the Clyde quay wharf Petone and Star came an), and a hard finish resulted in Petone winning by a canvas, with Star half a length behind Wellington. MAIDEN DOUBLE SCULLS, One mile. Taylor (cox) ■, 2 Wellington took an early lead and won easily by two lengths. Star and Petone forght out a hard race for second place, the former getting toe place by half a length. YOUTHS’ FOURS. One mile. Star Boating Club—E. Diehl (str), W. G. Nelson (3), H. R. Herd (2), W. P. Robb (bow), C. L. Webb icox) ... I Wellington Rowing dub —IV Porter (str), G. Grace (8), C. Leslio (2), P. Mawson (bow), A. Mawson (cox) ... 2 Star established a lead early, and came across from the outside position, wiiyiing easily by four lengths. After a series of collisions with Petone, Wellington came away and got second place by half a length. MAIDEN PAIRS. One mile. Wellington Rowing dub—J. Dalgleisb (str), J. Thomas (bow), H. Bognuda (cox) 1 Star Booting Club —L. J. Loftus (sir), F. B. Anyon (how), C. L. Webb (cox; 3 Star got away at the start with Wellington No. 1 close behind. With half a mile gone a bare length separated the four crows, but Wellington and Star drew ahead, the former taking a comfortable lead. Wellington won by three lengths, with Petone half a length behind Star, i JUNIOR FOURS. One mile and a quarter. Star Boating Club —R. N. Wakelin (str), W. G. Nelson (3). C. C. Hill (2), W. P. Shorland (Dow), C. L. Webb (cox) 1 Petone Rowing Club —B. Tremaine (str), M. Love (3), M. Allen (2), W. Sharon (bow), J. Pollock (cox) 2 This was a great race. All four crews (Ft,tone started two) were sent away together and kept within half a length to within half a mile from home. Here Petone and Wellington went ahead a little, but Petone No. 1 and Star soon came up again. The four crews crossed the. line within half a length of one another, Star getting the verdict from Petone No. 2, who stopped rowing just before the flag fell, by two feet. MAIDEN SCULLS, One mile. Wellington Rowing dub—C. Symonds 1 Star Boating dub—F. G. Oborn 2 Petone did not start. Won easily by Symonds, who led all the way. JUNIOR PAIRS, One mile. Wellington Rowing Club— H. Hyde (str), A. Macauley (bow), Bognuda (cox) 1 Star Boating dub—W. McGowan (str), W. G. Nelson (bow), C. L. Webb (cox; 2 Petone did not start, but Wellington sent out two crews. From a good start Wellington gradually drew ahead, and with three-quarters of a mile gone led by a good length. Star spurted gamely at the finish, but were unable to catch Wellington, who won by half a length. Wellington's No. 2 crew did not finish.
