THE CARNIVAL
THE CONCLUDING NIGHT.
£IOOO PROFIT EXPECTED.
The conclusion of the Citizen Soldiers’ Carnival on Saturday was marked by a. visit from- His Excellency the Gover-nor-General and Lady Jellicoe, and members of their staff, and musical programmes in the concert chamber of exceptional merit. The attendances all day were highly satisfactory, and there was ample evidence of the “community spirit” in the brisk trade that went on at the many stalls and in connection with the competitions and gaiiies. The main hall was devpted during the afternoon and evening to an interesting series of military competitions by senior cadets, including rifle exercises, physical drill, signalling, bugle competion, and a tug-of-war. Much enthusiasm was displayed by the contestants. Tlie prizes were presented in the evenmg by His Excellency, who delivered a brief address, in which lie particularly congratulated the prpmoters of the campaign upon its success. He also complimented the senior cadets upon their work. Their Excellencies visited all the stalls, and inspected the National War Museum exhibits, on view in the southern corridor!
They also attended tlie performance given _by the “Gay Gambols,” under the direction of Alr3 Abbott Russell, at tho concert chamber. This was a very bright entertainment provided by prominent local performers; it was a very popular department of the carnival. In the afternoon another pleasing dancing display was given in the small hall by the pupils of Air J. Knowsley. At the conclusion of the Saturday evening performance the remaining goods at the stalls were sold by auction. The executive expects to clear as a result of tlie carnival a sum of about £IOOO.
