April 13 and 14- Manawatu K.C. Autumn. NOTES and comment:. (By “Carbine.”) Masterton acceptances close on Monday. Mann vatu nominations are due on Tuesday. Acceptances for the Rangitikei meeting close on Monday. Napier Park autumn meeting concludes to-dav, and there will be racing to-day and on Monday. Matatua had a) lot of bad luck at Nelson, but he made up for it at Blenheim, where both the chief events came his way. He carried a big weight in the Marlborough Cup, but the lot he beat were of poor claG6. The Auckland Cup winner, StarJana, is on the lazy list, and is not likely to race again this season. Rua tar a wa* labelled yesterday, and a win and a fair return was the rei suit. i Weight stops any horse, and though Sweet Memory and Barleycorn were in a class above the other sprinters at Blenheim, they were both beaten yesterday. Tlie imported horse Swift Flight was made the medium of a plunge on both of the Te Aroha meeting (says the Auckland “Star”). On the opening day he never once looked to have ®-winning chance, but with Gray .in the saddle in the Wairakau Handicap he was in it right up to the post. He began well, and in the straight appeared to get his head in. front, bub Menanoe stuck to his ta6k in great style, and fairly worried him out of it over the last hundred yards. On present form Swift Flight is not much above moderate, but it is yet a bit early to judge of his capabilities, and he may be seen to more advantage shortly. The Hawk touched a very short price when he won at Napier Park yesterday. The craok two-yeai -old was early an the lead, and gave nothing a chance with him. On the Nelson-Blenheim circuit, just completed, X/Ord Uek ran five firsts and one second. There is still plenty of money to be picked up by anyone with a good hurdler. In the south there is a great dearth of fencers with any pretension to high class. Since his death Artilleryman has been referred to by Australian authorities in the most eulogistic terms. A writer in the “Sportsman” says he had every claim to be considered as good as Carbine ever was. His trainer is of the opinion that he was far and away the best horse he ever handled, and this view is shared by R. Lewis* who rode him when he won the Melbourne Cup in such phenomenal style.
