In the year 1872, when the late Mr John Dathie commenced business in Wanganui, he presented to the members of his staff a four-oared skiff, which Vas christened the Thermopylae, and which took part in many contests on the Wanganui river. In time, however, the crew scattered, and axe now resident in various parts of the Dominion. By a happy coincidence the five original members, Messrs H. T. Flyger, J. McDonald, J. Thain, R. Blythe, and W. B. Lane, met at Wanganui a short time ago. It was decided to celebrate the occasion by having their photograph taken in a group, and a cony of this has now been sent to Mr William Duthie, .the present head of the firm, and that gentleman has acknowledged 'the memento, expressing his gratification for the gift, and 1 congratulating ■the members of the crew on their hale and hearty appearance after so many year©. ’ With his usual promptitude the Mayor (Mr J. P. Luke) has opened a 6ubacription-liat at the Town Hall to augment the funds being raised to assist the -widow and children of. the late Mr E. H. Boyes, who was recently dloaned in the Hut-t river in attempting to rescue a girl. Subscriptions should be sent to the Mayor or the Town Clerk. A swimming and lifesaving exhibition- of members of the Wellington Life-Saving Society, under the leadership of Mr T. Shields, president of the society, is to be given at the Main Hutt bridge this afternoon, m aid of the widow and family bereaved.
