SHOCKING MINE TRAGEDY
GREAT MASS OF IRONSTONE COLLAPSES. TWENTY BELIEVED DEAD. By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright (Received March 11, 11.10 p.m.) SYDNEY, March 10. Afiter blasting operations at Hoekine’s mine at Cadia, Orange district, a mass of ironstone collapsed, .burying twenty men. Following the usual custom, the men working on the ore fired several shot® in an open face on the surface before the dinner interval. Soon after resuming the fall occurred, men without warning being buried under a mass of ironstone. Harrowing scenes were witnessed, families crowding around the mine and' watching the rescue work, which is proceeding with feverish haste. So far six bodies have been - recovered. There is little hope that- any will be dug out alive. The police rqport states that the disaster was due' to a premature explosion.
