Gray, K.C., chairman of the executive, presided. The chairman stated thatthe preparation,! were very well advanced, andjtiiat thi success of the carnival effort® we® already assumed. It Md been decided to open the carnival in the Town Hall at 3 p.m. on Saturday sext- The-open-ing ceremony would be performed by Mbor-General Sir A. IX. Russell, president of the League, and the following had been invited to f/peak:•—'lhe Prime Minister (the Hon. \w ■ F. Massey), the Leader of the Oppoetion (Mr T. M. Wilfordj, the Minister for Defence (Sir Heaton Rhodes) the Mayor of WeHington (Mr J. P. Luke), ana the president of the Wellington Retained SoWiere’ Association (Mr W. Perry). The carnival would be open afterwards and throughout the whole of the following week for the sale of goods, etp., the hoars being from 3 to .30 zv.m„ and 7AO p-m. to 10 p.m- An orchestra would, be provided every afternoon and. evening; faeaidee well-stocked stalls there would be numerous id de-shows and two Intchai canoe rfci would be given in the Concert; Chamber each evening. Vest snootingin* reports had been received from the decorations committee- and the artists (Messrs Hanna and King), and. they were assured of one of the most original, attractive, and striking displays ever made in Wellington. They were promised a treat they had not aeen brfore(AppAauae.) The organiser ("Mr R. Hill) stated that 1 entertainments that would be given would be of a -very high class, and for the jyr-ioe of admission to be charged, 6d per concert, would be the cheapest ever offered in WeHington. Captain Galloway. Vocational Training Officer, who wae in attendance, said 1-e hod just come from a visit to the military hospitals at Rotorua, Waipukurau, and Trentham, and desired to express the gratitude of “the boys in hospital blue" to the executive for its action in granting them free of charge a site for a stall for the sale of goods manufactured by them in hospital- That action was greatly appreciated, and the men in all the hospitals were working hard To make their stall the best of the lot. The work exhibited would be fully representative of that done in all the hospitals. The men. he added, had fully acquired the community dub spirit. (Applause.) Colonel G. Mitchell, M.P.. expressed the gratitude which all felt with, the ladies who had taken up tbe_ project so enthusiastically and were working so hard or the success of the carnival- If they did not realise the amount aimed at they would certainly get sufficient to enable them to start the Community Club, and the balance could be raised by other functions later on.
