LIGHTHOUSE EQUIPMENT
ALLEGED GERMAN CONTRiAjOT. DENIAL BY PRIME MINISTER. An allegationi that a contract _ for lighthouse equipment for the Dominion had been let to a German firm was brought under the notice of the Prime Minister at Auckland. Mr Massey denied any knowledge of it. . ' Tho statement, which was published in the ‘‘Daily Chronicle,’’ London, in January, was as follows: —"flow contracts are lost to this country is illustrated bv quotations received in New Zealand "in connection with lighthouse equipment. The British tender for this work was £3OOO without any guaranteed time of delivery. A* delivery m a specified time was required, a German firm was aoproached and' quoted £BOO less for the same work, with a penalty clause attached regarding delivery.” Mr Massey said it would hardly be possible for this to occur without his knowledge. He added: “I have never beard of it, and I don’t think it is correct, because all departments have been Notified that in all cases preference must l>e given to British-manufac-tured goods. I do not see how such •U tiling could have got past mo, and T am certain that no such tomter has beet i accepted ■’ ’
