PIRIE STREET RESERVE

■SPORTS PROTECTION LEAGUE ACTIVE. LETTER TO CITY COUNCILLORS. Through its secretary (Mr R. W. Shallorass), the New Zealand Sports Protection League has sent the following letter to city councillors who gave favourable answers to questions submitted by sports bodies prior to the last municipal elections:— “Dear Sir, —During the last municipal elections a number of questions were submitted to candidates by sports bodies, through the agency pf the above league. One of too most important tp which you gave a favourable answer was as followsPirie street Reserve—(l) Are you in favour of a comprehensive report being'obtained as to the suitability of the Pirie street Reserve for (a) sports grounds and tennis lawns, or (b) if physical conditions prevent the provision of sports grounds, as to its suitability for tennis lawns? (2) If the report is favourable to both or either of these purposes, are you in favour, when funds permit, of the formation of the ground recommended ? “Of all the works suggested in the questions submitted, that mentioned in the first par), of the above was the easiest of all to accomplish, yet I ain unable to find that anything at all has been done, and very soon there will be .another election. I trust that some steps will be taken to secure the desired report before your term of office expires. It is satisfactory to find that the extension of the municipal golf links, which you also undertook to support, is being carried out, and that provision has been made in the loan pnpSosals far a new pavilion for the Basin e: serve. “There may be some excuse on account of the position of the labour and money markets for the delay in the completion of A’nderson Park, the making of a sports ground in Central Park, and the construction of permanent baths at Thomdon, all of which works you promised to support. Tho league, however, considers that these improvements are essential and important, and that they should be carried out as soon as circumstance® will allow. We rely upon your assistance during the term of the present council.”
