SOLDIERS’ CARNIVAL

DEFENCE LEAGUES’ ACTIVITIES, PREP A RATI ONS _ IN HAND. A largely attended' meeting was held in the Conference Hall of the Dominion Farmers’ Institute last, evening for the purpose of discussing arrangements for the forthcoming Citizen Soldiers’ Carniyal, to he held under tlie auspices of J the Notional Defence League. Mr A. Gray, K.C., was in the chair. The secretary (Mr Bobert Hill) reported that eleven stalls had been 'booked to date, and several ‘others were in abeyance. Workers were required far the various stall®- Ladies .who were willing to assist were asked to send their names to the secretary, A lost of the stalls were well in hand, progress being particularly good in the ease of the R.S.A-, Fancy, art and needlework and garden stalls. A circular letter had boon sent to leading firms asking for their support, and this letter would be followed, up within the next few days by a personal canvass by a number of gentlemen. The E'ntei<tainmenta Committee had every'hope of being able to provide an excellent programme for, carnival week. It was intended to run vocal and Musical items in the Concert Chamber in the evening® in conjunction with the war museum, while dances and physical displays would probably be arranged for In the large hall. The committee dealing with advertising had its particular work well in hand. The museum exhibits will be chosen next week, and probably each article will be catalogued, so that visitors will know the history of every trophy shown. _ The report was adapted. The chairman said, that a letter had appeared in the Press which bad a tendency to throw cold water on, the seberne. The fact that the medical profession had expressed its opinion of the league’s possibilities ,for good was sulfiicieut guarantee far the league's activities. As to tho criticism of the appeal made to the public and questioning the advisability of expendng funds on the proposal, it was pointed opt that the league's obi cot was to secure £lO,000, which would provide sufficient capital for the building and running expense®, without anj' further call being made. The Y.M.C.A. had written approving of the league’s proposal, and were prepared to help. Dr A. K. Newman expressed his favour in the scheme on foot, but advised tliat mere publicity be given to it.
