TARANAKI RACES

THE OPENING DAY WAR PLANE’S BRILLIANT WIN IN CUP. FLYING TO INCOME. (By Telegraph.—Special to “Times.”) NEW PLYMOUTH, February 2. The autumn meeting of the Taranaki Jockey Club was opened to-day, in brilliant weather. 'There was a good attendance, and although most of the fields were very small the racing was fairly good. The totalisator showed a small decrease in investments. NGAKANUI WINS HURDLES. Racing opened with the Waitara Hack Hurdles, for which the topweight, Ngakanui, was most, in demand, and a surprising degree of confidence was placed in Ton Tere. Te Toa went away with the lead, followed closely by Kipling, but before the turn into the straight. Toa Tere moved up to first position, and, With Te Toa, he led the field past the stand. Round the back the field bunched, and three furlongs from home Ngakanui took command. The favourite went on to, win easily by six lengths from Kipling, who had to be ridden out to beat Te " Toa by half a length. Applaud was fourth, and Toa Tere last. A FAVOURITE BEATEN. Truthful and Tommy Rot were in great demand for the Juvenile Handicap. The start was good, but Tommy Rot was in charge before a furlong had been covered, and Truthful and Oranga ran together a few lengths behind him. Just before the turn, Mockery ran up to the leader, and in a good finish up the straight won by half a length. Truthful was a poor third, and Oranga was fourth. SIMONIDES BEATS DELIGHT. Backers would not hear of the defeat of Delight in the Mimi Welter, but the good thing did not come off. Hatch, on Simonides, got out smartly at the start, and, taking the rails, led the field to the hack stretch, with Tirana and Arrowfield close up, and Delight next. Simonides held his position «> EHe" home turn, rvhere he had a slight advantage. Simonides was never headed, and won by half a length from Delight, who finished fast on the outside. Kareao was another half-length away third, find Tirana was fourth. ■ • GOOD RACE FOR THE CUP. The thousand-pound stake for the Taranaki Cup was contested by a field of five, of which Surveyor was favourite. Rose Wreath, who was in at the bottom of the handicap, assumed the role of pacemaker, and, passing the stand, led Volo and Surveyor, with Warplane and Marqueteur following. Going along the back Warplane improved his position, and a' little later Volo moved up ’to the leader. Turning for home, Rose Wreath and Volo were just ahead of Warplane, with Marqueteur coming fast on the outer. Warplane shot to the front as soon as the straight was entered, and, vigorously handled by G. Clarke, he kept ahead to the end. and won by threequarters of a length from Surveyor, with Marqueteur and Volo next and 1 Rose Wreath last.

GOOD DIVIDEND IN SCTH BY. 'Pop Doji', who had run second at l.evin, was favourite in the. Moiuroa Electric flack eveut, and ran a. good race, bur was well beaten at the finish. War Nurse led at the start, followed by Homan, with Festive and Top Don; next. The four had the finish to themselves, but War Nurse was never headed and won by two lengths from Homan, who was just in front of Festive and Top Dog. INCOME’S GOOD GALLOP. Although Silver Link was a better favourite than Blackmail In the Flying, she was giving what looked to he a good return. Rossini was first away, but was soon headed by Blackmail and Income. The pair rallied on the running from Silver Link to near the straight entrance, where Silver Link took second place and looked likely to win, but she did not finish well and was beaten by a neck by Income, whose success made the third win of the day for I the apprentice S. Anderson. Rossini was third, Blackmail fourth, and Egmont Park last. The time (lniin 14sec) is a good gallop for this track. ANOTHER FAVOURITE GOES UNDER,. The Okato Hack Handicap was another five-horse contest, and Prodigal was a big fancy. The favourite got away well, but Lord Ashlea soon headed him off and gradually he drifted into a had position. Gray drove him into second place before the home turn, but he ran wide, and when- straightened up failed by a neck to catch Complex, who finished well on the rails. . TRAFUKA WINS THE LAST RACE. The last race of the day—the Timaru Hack Handicap—drew the biggest field of the day-, and wagering took a wide range. Quiniro and Stork were most in demand, but neither took a hand in the finish. The field had not fone far when Deeley took the lead on rapuka, and he was in the van practically all the way. Munition went with him, and in a great finish Deeley got his mount home by a bare head. The Wellington-owned “Vindictive finished fast in third place, and with a littlo farther to go would have won.
