GREATER WELLINGTON

POSITION OF DAY’S BAY ' RATEPAYERS AND AMALGAMATION QUESTION. MEETING OF ASSOCIATION. The annual mating of the Day’s Bay Ratepayers' Association was held on Saturday fircMnfi. Mr D. I\. Hoggaxd presided. AMALGAMATION. The annual repoit strfsj-ed the importance of the question, of amalgamation. The resolution of the laet annual general meeting in regard to legislation to enable non-oontiguous districts to join up with ally ‘borough or city was brought to the notice of the Mayor of "Wellington, who made it plain that the city did not want Day's Bav to join unless Eastbourne joined up too. Eastbourne a heady had legislative power to join the city, and it appeared that Day's Bay’s chance of joining the city depended enQrely upon the course adopted by Eastbourne. The report reviewed the movement to amalgamate with Eastbourne and the attitude of a meeting of ratepayers called to consider the question. Considerable hostility was shown at the meeting bv ratepaj'ers who were not members of the association, and the upshot was that the question was held over for further consideration. It would be the duty of the incoming committee to arrange a me ting of rate-payers to conshier the question furth-r. “It is important,*' stated the report, “that- an early decision should be reached, aa, if Day's Bay does not intend to amalgamate, an effort be made to secure relief against the h©.:vy charges for - the maintenance of the Main roadAt .the present, time the whole of the cost of maintaining the road from Evetbourne boundary to the Perone boundary falls upon the three bays—Lowry, York, and Day's. The consequence is that nearly all the rates from those three bays is absoibed in maintaining the main road, 'with the consequence that too little is available for the improvement of side roads and other works. A TOLL GATE. . The committee reported that it had suggested to the Hutt County Council the advisability of establishing a tollgate to provide funds for the maintenance and improvement of the Main road. The council had referred the matter to the Public Works Department. It was pointed ont that the establishment of a toll-gate would ensure that people who used the' road would pay formats upkeep. The report referred also with satisfaction to the election of Mt Atkinson, a resident of York Bay, a gentleman intimately acquainted with the affaire of the Hutt County to represent the Wainui-o-mata Riding on the Hutt County Council. " n ' as expressed at the failure or a- number of ratepayers to join the association. The question of amalgmation is to be discussed further cext month. ELECTION OF OFFICERS.
