DISASTROUS FIRE

HOMESTEAD DESTROYED. The well-known homestead of Mr Norman Groves, at “Bushgrove,” in the Mungapakeha Valley, between Masterton and. Tinui, was totally destroyed by fire (writes the “Times” special correspondent). The house, which was valued at £4OOO, was built about twenty-five years ago, and was one of the best known residences in that part, of' the district. It is understood that the fire originated through a defective chimney, as flames' were seen issuing from a portion, of the roof near the kitchen chimney. The workmen were near at hand, but all efforts to save the house were unavailing, a strong breeze assisting the fire in its work of destruction, although a small quantity of furniture was saved. The insurance on the house amounted to £IOOO, and on the furniture £3OO.
