‘TREMENDOUS ADVANCE’
REVALUATION OF CITY MAYOR LUKE’S SIGNIFICANT REMARKS. “MAY TAX PRETTY HIGH.” Some brief remarks upon the revaluation of the city were made by the Mayor (Mr J. P- Luke) at .last night’s meeting of the City Council. The .revaluation of the oity was now almost complete, he. said. The new adjustments would give the council an opportunity to tax pretty high. How far the citizen* would respond to the demands made upon them by way of taxation was a matter for the new council to deal with. The city had not been revalued since about 1914. There had been tremendous improvement,* in the inner circle of the city and there would be tremendous advancements in values. He thought the'puiblicans of the pity would' find their rating capacity would be considerably higher. Hie did not think there would bo any great advance in the suburban districts. If any adjustments were to be made, continued the Mayor, they would be fair and honestly carried out. During recent years the Valuation Department had carried out the annual ■ valuations of the city. The council would be able to send out its revaluation notices directly the revaluation was complete. Mr Luke expressed appreciation of the assurance afforded to the council’s officers by the Valuer-General (Mr Flannagan) and his staff in connection with the revaluation operotians. In conclusion, the Mayor made reference to the grand work of the city valuer, Mr James Ames. He had entered the*service of the city about 50 veers ago, and when the fame oaane for him to hand his department over a successor he thought it would be a siting thing to appoint has son, Mr Arthur Ames. s
