MOTORISTS IN COURT

BY-LAW BREACHES. OFFENDERS DEALT WITH BT MAGISTRATE. In the Magistrate’s Court yesterday afternoon Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., dealt with several offenders against the city by-laws. The following motorists were fined for travelling along Lambton qnay at a greater speed than 15 miles an hour:—■ Frederick Ernest Quayle, £3 and costs; J. Staples, £2 and costs; Charles W. Anderson (Mr O. C. Mazengarb), £1 and costs. EXCESSIVE SPEED. Gerard Convissce. a taxi proprietor, for whom Mr P. W. Jacknon appeared, was charged with exceeding the speed limit of 15 miles per hoar in Lambton quay, and also with having turned from Willis street into Lambton quay at more than six miles an hoar. Defendant pleaded not guilty. The evidence of the police was that defendant at 5.30 a.m. in the morning had driven his car round Stewart Dawson’s corner at a speed of about 35 miles per hour, and at a speed of about 40 miles an honr along the qnay. _ Mr Jackson said that at the time of

the alleged breach of the by-laws there was no traffic or nobody on the streets. Defendant admitted rounding the corner at from 10 to 12 miles per hoar, but denied going over 15 miles along Lambton quay. Defendant was fined 10b and costs on each charge.

OTHER BREACHES. For failing to display the necessary lights on motor-cars, while standing in Bidwell street, Percy Peter Helmling and Stephen Henry Matterson were each fined 5s and costs.

George McDonald, for failing to effectually lock the wheels of a cart with horse attached, in Adelaide road, was ordered to pay 7s costs only. Joseph Taylor and William A. Morris were each lined 10s and costa for leaving horse-drawn vehicles unattended for a longer period than five minutes. Douglas Seymour, for leaving a mo-tor-car in the street without lights waa fined 5s and costs, and Sydney Sadler was convicted and ordered to pay costs for driving a car without lights.
