COMMERCE AND MINING

WELLINGTON STOCK EXCHANGE. YESTERDAY'S QUOTATIONS. —« i

Sate on ’Chang>:—Huddart Darker, .££ SALES ELSEWHERE. DLXEDJX. January IS. Sales on 'Change—Howard Smith l o «8s Sd. LONDON WOOL SALES. Austro l:n >i -I \ > • (Received Januarv IS, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. January 17. At the wool sales reserves merinos war unchanged, and there were heavy with drawals, especially 01 fine combings. .He serves crossbreds lowered slightly, am consequently there was more cleared but the prices were still too high. Then was a poor selection of slipes, but -bej were mostly withdrawn. On the Bradford market there was i better tone, and more inquiry, but ousi ness was small. FOREIGN EXCHANGE RATES. instraltati ami NZ Cable Association (Received January 18, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. January IT. Foreign exchanges on London art quoted:—Paris. CO. 55 francs to JEI; Stockholm, 17.57 kroner; Christiania. 21.70 kroner; Calcutta. 17Jd to the rupee; Yokohama, 30Jd to the yen; Hongkong 35id to the dollars Montreal, 4.25 dollars: New York. 3.74 dollars. AUCKLAND MARKET. FARMERS' AUCTIONEERING CO. The Farmers’ Co-operative Auctioneering Co., Ltd., Hamilton, report under date January 17th as under: Beef—Beef is now coming forward plentifully, and as usual at the com mencement of the freezing season the demand is fairly brisk. The*bulk of the supply is being absorbed by the export companies, but according to reports, competition ia keeping the value somewhat attend of hook price. Mutton —Mutton also is meeting with good competition, although the supply is scarcely sufficient to satisfy the local demand. In this branch there is no question whatever that yard values are well ahead of freezing rates. Fat Lambs—Although the export companies have been on rather an unequal - footing this season, there has, nevertheless, been sufficient competition to cn- - sore' the highest values being obtained. all the early drafts have alSMtny reached the works, and very satisfactory weight sheets returned. Store Cattle—The demand for store cattle of all classes has slackened off and similarly the supply, a common occurrence at this time of year. Grown cattle are stifl in fair demand. Apparently the yarding* of weaner calves will not be heavy, but it is~ safe to predict fair inquiry. . .Store Sheep—With the - exception of i rape lambs, which are selling freely, very little business has been done in store sheep. It is in consequence very difficult to indicate the tone of the market. Quotations for breeding ewes from the south and otheT outside districts seem, much -ahead of local anticipations and with the decline in export values, far from justified. Figs—The pig market has shown a further decline. It is interesting, though somewhat painful, to note that values in the yards at this period twelve months ago, were more than ICO ner cent, ahead cf those ruling at present. • THE LOCAL MARKETS LAEBY AND CO.’s REPORT.
