PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL

LAST NIGHTS MEETING, A meeting of the Fetone Borough * Council was held last evening. There were present: The Mayor (Mr J. W. McEwan), Councillors C. P. Brockle- , bank, J. Churchouse, J. Kyle W. Hay, 0. Anderson, D. Bedingfield, G. Cook, and E. Tovey. The Prime Minister, in reply to a communication from the council, advised that consideration was to be given to the proposed taxation of local body debentures, and amendments to the by-laws were to be made which were likely to give satisfaction to local < bodies. A report was received from the Dunedin City Council suggesting that the Government be urged to _ provide all loans required by local bodies, subject to proper safeguards. ' It was considered that arrangements., should be made to ensure that the interest pnyable would be at the lowest market rate of interest,.-and-wovdd' result in a uniform rate being paid-throughout the Dominion by local bodies.—lt was decided to support'the suggestion. _ The secretary of the Education Board wrote in respect to proposed school site a\ Wilford settlement, and asked for an expression 'of opinion that no objection would be taken by the council to the dedication of the proposed site with the intervening 6treet. The proposal -was-approved. An application . \"as made br th« League Football Club for an allotment of grounds by the end of February for the next football season; DEPARTMENTAL REPORTS. The borough engineer (Mr A. Cowie) reported that a certain amount of metalling of the 6treeta had been carried .out, but some of the streets were in a bad state of repair. Should toe weather remain fine the metalling of the east end of Jackson street would be completed. .As far as could be ascertained Priest's avenue was a drainage reserve, end in the nature of a private street, therefore the owners of property abutting on the street were responsiblo for its upkeep. The borough inspector (Mr W. B. Gough), in his monthly report, said hf bad made 138 visits during September Three sanitary defects were discovert ed in separate premises. A house-to house inspection was in progreat.
