SUPERANNUATION
SHOULD TEACHERS’ TRAINING . PERIOD COUNT? — Th£ ' question whether the period spent'in training by teachers should count for superannuation was broughi. up .m-tho, ..House of Representatives yesterday,afternoon by Hr. Thacker, Jii.Pi for Christchurch East. A teacher. stated the hon. member, had written hint stating'that at one time the training' period did count for superannuation. but ho understood that it did not count now. Ho held that it ought to count. The Hon. O. J. Parr (Minister for Education) stated that he d-d not have an-opportunity of going into tho matter-; - but, speaking from memory, he thought the position was that untd quite- recently the, period of training was counted, and some teachers had retired and were superannuated on that basis. Then the opinion of the Solicitor-General was taken, _ and he advised that the period of training should not be and could not legally be. counted. The result was that at present the period of training did not count The whole question of.superannuation, not in regard to teachers only, but in regard to the whole ot the public service, ivas before Cabinet, but whether legislation would be brought down this year he was unable to say.' Cabinet would probably decide the point at its next meeting.
