CAPTAIN REID
SUBSTANTIAL BENEFIT FUND. There Was a (representative meeting of tho Captain Reid Benefit Fund committee at Eastbourne last night Mr F. H. Mather (Mayor of Eastbourne) was in the chair. Tho ropoit of tho committee w»» submitted, which showed that its efforts had been successful. Thp (response given to tho appeal for funds had been extremely satisfactory. Captain Reid, after over 20 years’ service as master of tho ferry steamers, was stricken down with a severe illness which incapacitated him from again taking command of a vessel. In order to show, in some measure, tho esteem in which he was held by the residents of the eastern shores, pf tho harbour, it was decided to raise funds with the object of purchasing a house for Captain Reid, and that object has been attained. A garden fete, which was held in tho grounds of Mr A. W. Blair’s residence nt Day’s Bay, realised over £4OO, and the fund was further augmented by the holding of open-air concerts, while tho contributions from tho Merchant Service Guild, practicalSy every resident of tho eastern side of tho harbour, and many other friends wore responsible for a sura of more than £BSO being collected. Tho committee has purchased a residence for Captain Reid and his family , the .Public Trustee has taken over the trust and is administering it free of charge.
