ONE BIG UNION
"When a prairie fire is cavorting, would you strew gunpowder in front of it?" It sounds absurd; hut the meaning is very close to Mr Fraser's question to the Minister for Marine. Would the Minister introduce legislation this session enabling .seamen to havei their unionft- registered through-; but New Zealand as one union? Innocent Mr Fraser! And he had actually heard "that the department was not averse to this benig.done." Having, admired ingenuousness, lot, us admire the Minister's sagacity. The Government, 6aid Sir William, might do something for a Dominion award; but a Dominion Union—not quite the same thing 1 The answer implies a readiness to give all that can possibly be required for union security and comfort; and a decided aversion to forge a more effective., weapon- for the irresponsible use of. direct action, the aversion extending oven to a single step towards the forging. More*than-this, it is-impos-sible to say. In. thatr fact we rejoice quite as greatly as in the plain bluntness of the Minister's refusal.
